Do you ever feel like job hunting is a part-time job? It’s because it is.

Searching for jobs isn’t an easy task, especially when it’s your first time entering a field or you are a new professional. I’d like to pay it forward and share a few tips that helped me secure a role in a new field as a Career Design Consultant at the University at Buffalo.

  • Learn to be okay with rejection (rejection is redirection).
  • Leverage your network.
  • Find a community (Stay connected with our Slack channel).
  • Ask for help (Book an appointment with a Career Design Consultant).
  • Identify people in your network or outside of your network that would provide insight into their experience and potentially connect you with other people.
  • Informational interviews. Find people who have the job you “want” and learn about what it’s like to work in that role.
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job description (I know, it’s my least favorite part too).
  • Align your life goals with your career goals.

We spend a huge part of our lives working. It’s essential that you can also construct the life you envision through your career. Be unapologetically you and advocate for yourself.

Here are some resources that helped me throughout this journey.
