A 3-Step Formula for Your Next Interview

“Why do you want to work here?” is a potential stumbling block for everyone, even experienced candidates.

Even if you desperately need the job, “Because you’re hiring”, “Because I need money”, and “Because my current company sucks” are not legit answers.

People tend to oversimplify the answer and often forget the main goals:

1) Show that you did your research

2) Show why you find the position interesting

3) Show why you’re the one for the job

To answer this question like a pro, consider these things 👇👇👇

Think about the company you’re applying to and what sets them apart. You picked them for a reason. It could be that you like the industry, the product, or their values. Whatever it is, try to incorporate that in your answer.

Next, think about the position. Again, you found it attractive enough to apply, so there must be a reason why you see yourself in this role. Maybe it’s the logical next step for your career or a challenge you’d like to take on.

Finally, consider how you can contribute and succeed in the role, and think about some of your key (relevant) achievements.

Now merge these points into one and you’re done! 🎉

Imagine you’re looking to join AirBnb Plus as an Interior Design Consultant. This is what you could say:

As an Interior Designer, I spent the last 10 years working with architects and clients on creating functional, unique, and beautiful spaces. I’ve also been both an AirBnb Superhost and user and I deeply admire your company culture and how you continue to make profound changes in the hospitality industry. I think I’d fit perfectly because of my previous experience with designing accommodation units in 2 boutique hotels, my existing relationships with hip furniture brands and local craftsmen, and my communication skills. I would love to work with hosts to create thoughtfully designed rentals that would reflect their personality and have a cohesive interior style.

Let’s wrap up, to answer this like a pro, you need to:

→ Answer why that company

→ Answer why that position

→ Answer what you bring to the table
