Olin will be joining us at the 2025 STEAM Job + Internship Fair this fall and Hailey has some insights and advice to share!
Tell us a bit about you and your journey to Olin Corporation?
Olin discovered me through Handshake for a role that matched my background. While I was not actively looking for a role, they reached out and described more about the role and organization. As someone focused on personal development and gaining new skills, I found the environment at Olin to match exactly what I was looking for in my next role. Through the interview process, I found each employee to be personable and enjoyed their experience at Olin. As a result, I relocated from Northeast Ohio to our Tennessee office and have been loving it ever since!
What is your organization’s primary focus within the manufacturing sector?
We operate in the chemicals manufacturing and ammunition manufacturing industries. Our three business segments include Chlor Alkali Products & Vinyls, Epoxy, and Winchester Ammunition.
What key products, services, or research areas define your organization?
In Chlor Alkali Products and Vinyls, our products include chlorine, chlorinated organics, ethylene dichloride, hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and vinyl chloride monomer. Our epoxy products include curing agents, epoxy resins, and diluents. For Winchester Ammunition, we have various kinds of ammunition including handgun, rifle, rimfire, and shotshell.
What sparked your interest in technology and manufacturing talent acquisition?
My entire HR career has been in the manufacturing sector and the primary reason I went into HR was to help people. I have enjoyed being in the Talent Acquisition space as it has allowed me to help individuals bring their skills and background to find their perfect role.
How have your roles and responsibilities evolved over time in the tech and manufacturing sector?
I started out heavy on the employee relations side focused in the day-to-day operations, then moved into a strategic focus as my career has continued to grow. Now with my focus being Talent Acquisition, I partner with our site HR team and manufacturing leaders on our college recruiting program. While my roles and responsibilities have changed, supporting people has been the core consistently.
What qualities or experiences do you look for when hiring in tech and engineering roles?
There are two pieces we look for when hiring: technical knowledge and soft skills. In terms of technical knowledge, talking about relevant work experience or highlighting relevant classes and projects can help display your skills there. For soft skills, this includes communication, organization, time management, conflict resolution, etc.
What advice would you give students to help them stand out in a competitive technical field?
Get involved! Whether through co-ops/internships, student organizations, and other school events.
