Career Launch is a four-week virtual program at UB designed to help students grow their professional skills, strengthen their networks, and gain confidence in pursuing career opportunities. Our first fall cohort kicks off on September 11 from 1:00–1:45 PM and will run for four weeks.
Q: What made you decide to join Career Launch?
I decided to join Career Launch because utilizing the opportunities offered to me, especially to develop my social network, has become such an essential part of my college career.
Q: What were you hoping to get out of the program when you started?
When I joined the program, I was hoping to gain more confidence and knowledge when reaching out to potential connections.
Q: What part of Career Launch stood out to you the most?
I can’t pinpoint a single tool or activity, but what stood out the most was the fact that I basically had no choice but to reach out to people. Without the program, I’m not sure I ever would have taken that first step to message them. Career Launch gave me the push I needed.
Q: How has Career Launch influenced your career or academic goals?
Career Launch influenced my goals significantly. If I hadn’t done this program, I never would have met an incredible mentor of mine. I first reached out to her because of one of the program’s activities, and ever since then she has taken me under her wing. She introduced me to the field of Higher Education Administration and inspired me to pursue my Master’s degree. I honestly can’t imagine where I would be without her—or without this program.
Q: What advice would you give another student thinking about joining Career Launch?
Some advice I always recommend when networking is to show your personality. When you meet over Zoom or in person, it’s more comfortable for everyone if you can just be yourself. It’s important for people to see what makes you unique, instead of acting the way you think they want you to act. Try not to overthink it too much!
