We are currently hiring for the Winter Break (Jan 2025) & Spring 2025 Semester!
Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Informal Recreation, Student Coordinator, and Office Supervisor, Fitness Leaders are responsible for having working knowledge of the proper use of free weights, cardiovascular equipment, and selectorized machines. Fitness Leaders enforce policies and procedures of the fitness center floor and the Ed Wright Practice facility. They take an active role in daily maintenance and cleanliness of the fitness floor, and promote Recreation & Intramural and services, group exercise, and special events. Fitness leaders are expected to provide professional customer service at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver world class customer service at all times.
- Be familiar with Alumni Arena emergency procedures, protocols, and display confidence in the implementation of each.
- Ensure the Alumni Arena is a safe and clean environment for members.
- Follow the equipment reporting policy for all equipment irregularities, including any that are standard maintenance and repair.
- Become proficient in and enforce all policies, procedures, guidelines and rules of the Alumni Arena in a firm, fair and consistent manner when applicable. Customer service is never compromised when doing this.
- Adhere to all University at Buffalo and Alumni Arena policies.
- Maintain positive communication skills with all peers, superiors and employees.
- Attend staff meetings and training classes. Assist in staff training through direct instruction and/or participation.
- Display proficiency in the operation of basic computer skills as well as Pics software.
- May provide individual guidance and backup support to unit staff as required.
- Assume all other duties and projects assigned.
- Circulating the fitness floor (including the Track, Ed Wright Practice facility, racquetball courts, and lounge area) in an effort to assist patrons with questions and safety policies and procedures.
- The Fitness Leader needs to initiate appropriate assistance and instruction with members and/or guests if they appear to be in need of assistance or if they are endangering themselves or others.
- Follow the regular cleaning and preventive maintenance inspection program.
- Demonstrate confidence and familiarity with all exercise floor equipment. Perform equipment orientations for members regarding free weights, cardiovascular equipment, and selectorized machines.
- Perform daily operational tasks in a timely and proficient manner as directed.
Education and Experience:
- Preferred major in exercise science or other health related field.
or
- A Minimum of one-year experience as an athlete
or
- Previous fitness related employment (gyms, rec centers, etc.)
or
- Basic computer operational skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills required.
- Ability to be punctual and work variable hours necessary.
- Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
