“One aspect I focus on in many of my courses is the real-world job applicability of the material being covered in class. Students frequently want to know how what they are learning will help them down the line, and prospective students and parents want to know why they should choose one major over another. I have also taken advantage of the ability to have a Career Design Center consultant come into my courses and talk about what they can offer. Together, these courses and presentations help inform the students of what resources they can use at UB to help get them to the career they want.
Outside the classroom, the CDC and I put together a career sit and talk event, where students could come ask the people they one day hoped to become how they got to that point in life. The event has been a great success, and feedback that I have gathered from students have found it to be extremely helpful. Additionally, while not a hiring fair, I know of at least one student who got a job due to a connection that happened at one of these events, and two students who ended up with internships. This was only possible due to the willingness to collaborate of the CDC.”
