Quick, easy tips to help you get on track and start ahead.
Worrying about finding a job or internship can get frustrating, which gets old fast! But let’s face it, no way wants to think about the stresses. So, here are a few things that can help you get ahead without the stress.
Spoiler alert: The fourth tip is my favorite.😉
1. It’s ok to get help.
You got to start somewhere, so why not use the Career Design Center’s downloadable samples and templates to help you build your resume, CV or cover letter—no need to start from scratch. We even have a thank you note template you can use after meeting with someone.
2. Tell your story.
Have your resume and LinkedIn profile reviewed with personalized feedback in seconds with VMock, and make sure it’s ready to show employers your career story. ⚠️ If you’re in the School of Management, access the School of Management VMock site.
💡 Pro Tip: You can store your resumes and other documents in your Bullseye powered by Handshake profile, so they’re ready when you need them. You can even apply to jobs in two clicks with Quick Apply.
3. Make it you. 😍
Filling in your profile helps Bullseye powered by Handshake to give you personalized recommendations that you’d be a good fit for and match your interests and skills. It also helps you get noticed by recruiters who can message you about the roles you want. See how you can maximize your profile.
💡 Pro Tip: Don’t forget to add your favorite career clusters (we like to call them career communities) that best match your interests.
4. Look at pictures or videos of dogs.
Or cats if you like that kind of thing.
Spending time with dogs helps improve physical health, reduces loneliness, anxiety, depression, and shyness, promotes trust, lowers stress by increasing oxytocin (the bonding hormone) and decreasing cortisol (the stress hormone). So why wouldn’t you want to spend time with a dog (or cat)?
5. Discover opportunities you like. 💙
Bullseye powered by Handshake and Interstride makes job or internship searching simple. These US and abroad opportunities are meant for students like you, so you can get the work experience you need. Just use your UBIT name and password and let the searching begin!
💡 Pro Tip: Bookmarking jobs and internships helps train Bullseye powered by Handshake to serve you better recommendations based on the stuff you want to see. Bookmarking also saves them to your dashboard to make it easy to apply. Plus, you’ll get reminders to apply before the deadline.
6. Practice makes perfect.
Yes, this is a cheesy saying but there’s some truth in it. Try playing interview roulette and practice answering the hard interviewing questions using Big Interview. You never know what questions an employer will ask you. Use your UB email address to register for a free account.
💡 Pro Tip: Start brainstorming activities/projects you’ve done in the past and what skills learned to become a star during an interview.
Bonus:
It’s never too early to start designing your life after college. The Career Design Studio is the place where you can find inspiration, resources and tools all together to help you design a life you love, no matter where you are in the design process. Okay, now more videos of dogs!
