College and university are more important than ever, but simply attending and working hard to get a good grade is far from enough.

In fact, your grade is almost the least important thing to take away from any degree.

You need to graduate, yes, but more than a good grade, you need to consider how you can use your time at college to further your professional and creative career in ways that employers notice.

That’s why, in 2023, this is how you can make the most of your college experience:

Choose the Best School for You

There are many colleges out there, and finding the right one for you is essential. You can opt for the highest-ranking one you can feasibly attend, or you can choose the one that supports you personally, so you can succeed professionally.

You’ll also want to consider a few practical things like the distance to you, whether there’s an online degree option, the cost, financial aid, and so much more.

Actively Participate in Clubs and Societies

Clubs and societies are available on almost every campus, including those designed for those coming back to college after a sabbatical or to pursue a second career. Keep in mind that you can’t just join. Joining is as easy as putting your name down and maybe paying a membership fee, and you need to be an active participant.

If you can work your way into some sort of leadership position, then perfect. Choose the societies that align with your personal or professional interests, and you’ll make great friends, network brilliantly, and have excellent talking points for your future job hunt.

Attend Talks, Workshops, and More Outside Your Curriculum

Attending talks, workshops, and events offered by colleges can be beneficial in broadening your horizons and learning new skills.

It’s recommended to take advantage of these opportunities, even if they don’t directly relate to your major, as they can help develop critical thinking skills and provide a broader perspective. Attend as many as possible to maximize the benefits.

Complete One to Two Internships Per Year

To gain valuable experience and make connections in your industry, it’s recommended to complete one to two internships per year.

It’s even better if you can intern in different areas of your field to gain a well-rounded understanding of the industry. This will make you a more competitive job candidate.

Tackle a Big Personal Project

During your college years, it’s an excellent opportunity to embark on a substantial personal or professional project that can enhance your skill set and demonstrate your abilities. This could be an entrepreneurial venture all the way to creating a short film.

This project can help you differentiate yourself from others to potential employers, and it can also provide you with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Apply for Awards on and off Campus

Remember to apply for awards both on and off campus, as they can provide recognition for your hard work and enhance your resume. Apply for scholarships, grants, and awards in your area of study, as well as general awards for leadership, community service, and academic achievement.

Don’t be hesitant to apply, and take advantage of these opportunities. They’ll help you focus your educational career and also look great on a resume.
