The University at Buffalo Upward Bound Program is seeking Residential Assistants/Advisors (RA’s) to supervise high school students during its six-week Summer Intensive Academic Program. RA’s must reside in the dormitory Sunday afternoon – Friday afternoon to provide supervision for students, and be responsible for assisting with their academic and evening activities, meals, field trips, leadership development, and residence life programming. RA’s must demonstrate the ability to multi-task; serving as a mentor, counselor and referral agent while enforcing Program behavioral standards at all times. RA’s must be willing to interact, make a positive impact, and demonstrate leadership to all program participants.
Residential Assistants work cooperatively with the administrative staff, instructional, and residential staff of Upward Bound to create an enriching residential experience in support of our Programs’ academic goals and objectives to ensure a smooth transition to College/University life for all of our students.
The employment package for this position is inclusive of a dormitory room, all meals, field trip admission fees and a stipend.
Job Duties of Residential Assistants/Advisors are as follows:
1. Serving as a teaching assistant to an assigned instructor. This includes classroom management and instruction as needed.
2. Assisting in monitoring class attendance and reporting absences to UBP Counselors.
3. Serving as link between classrooms, dormitory, and Administrative and Instructional staff.
4. Tutoring all students who come under areas of their expertise.
5. Serving as group leader/mentor and establish solid rapport with a minimum of 8-10 residential students and 4-5 commuter students.
6. Serving as chaperone on all field trips and at all social events.
7. Personally encouraging active student participation in all areas of the program.
8. Participating in all assigned evening activities.
9. Refer students with problem(s)/concern(s) to the Residential Hall Director and Administrative Staff of Upward Bound when necessary.
10. Consistently enforcing all University Residence hall and Upward Bound Program rules.
11. Attending all residential hall general meetings and individual meetings with the Residence Hall Director and Upward Bound Director as needed.
12. Reporting any and all infractions regarding drugs, fighting, medical emergencies, alcohol or sexual conduct, to the Residence Hall and Upward Bound Director immediately.
13. Writing, obtaining and/or collecting UBP Critical Incident Reports and Student Statement Forms with the UBP Administrative Staff and/or Residential Director within 24 hours.
14. Waking your students up by 6:30 a.m., daily for breakfast and morning, classes and accompany them to the Dining Hall, the morning classes.
15. Conducting a room-check each night and enforce the “lights out’ rule.
16. Supervising all meals in the dining hall, University Commons, and/or UB’s Student Union.
17. Conducting room inspections periodically for cleanliness and/or fire hazards.
18. Always encouraging a positive, secure, and respectful community environment that inspires students to develop to their full potential.
Requirements
Applicants must be responsible, diligent, and conscientious with good communication skills. Also, applicants must have completed at least (2) years of college; maintaining a B/3.0 Grade Point Average throughout matriculation. Experience working with adolescents is highly desirable. Familiarity with TRIO programs is also highly desired, but not required
Hours, Dates and Compensation:
Residential Assistants/Advisors (RAs) must reside in the dormitory Sunday afternoon – Friday afternoon and must be available to work throughout all summer program dates, beginning with RA staff pre-trainings on June 17-28, 2024, thru August 9, 2024. The dates of the residential program are tentatively scheduled as follows: July 7, 2024 through July 26, 2024. The compensation for the Residential Assistant position is $3360.00 (commiserate upon weeks of service, experience, and educational background) stipend, and is inclusive of dormitory room charges, University at Buffalo identification card, meals (Sunday dinners-Friday lunches), and all field trip/excursion admission fees throughout the summer program. The compensation for the Residential Director position is a range of $4,000.00 (commiserate upon weeks of service, experience, and educational background) stipend, and is inclusive of dormitory room charges, University at Buffalo identification card, meals (Sunday dinners-Friday lunches), and all field trip/excursion admission fees throughout the summer program.
