The University at Buffalo Upward Bound Program (UBP) is seeking Teaching Assistants (TA’s) who are responsible for: relieving Residential Assistants(s) of morning duties and work closely with Lead Teachers to reinforce lessons; reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups when necessary. TA’s help Lead Teachers with record keeping, such as tracking attendance, administering and scoring academic quizzes, test and or with Friday challenges. TA’s enforce all Program and class rules to strengthen proper classroom management skills. TA’s help lead teachers prepare for lessons by getting materials ready or setting up equipment, such as chairs, technology and/or worksheets. As well as, helping supervise students in class, between classes, during lunch, and/or group, module prep-time.
Additional Teaching Assistant (TA) duties include:
1. Following the UBP Code of Behavior Standards, Honor Code and Dress Code consistently.
2. Arriving to campus on time on respective assigned days.
3. Assisting in monitoring class attendance and reporting absences to UBP Counselors.
4. Assisting the instructor in helping the students to remain on-task in an atmosphere conducive to learning.
5. Developing appropriate TA student relationships to demonstrate a commitment through mentoring, to assist students in developing the motivational skills necessary for success in college.
6. Working with students to: complete assignments, prepare for tests and improve overall academic skills.
7. Incorporating study skills and time management techniques into assisting students with their assignments.
8. Attending trainings, weekly meetings, and other UBP functions as required and
9. Always maintaining confidentiality regarding student work, conversations, and records.
10. Serving as a teaching assistant to an assigned instructor. This includes classroom management and instruction as needed.
11. Tutoring all students who come under areas of their expertise.
12. Serving as group leader/mentor and establish solid rapport with a minimum of 8-10 residential students and 4-5 commuter students.
13. Serving as chaperone on all field trips and at all social events, if/when necessary.
14. Personal encouraging active student participation in all areas of the program.
15. Participating in all assigned day-time activities.
16. Identifying students’ problems and conferring with the Administrative Staff of Upward Bound when necessary.
17. Attending all UBP general Staff Meetings and individual meetings with the UBP Administrative Staff, as necessary.
18. Reporting any and all infractions regarding drugs, fighting, medical emergencies, alcohol or sexual conduct, to the Upward Bound Director immediately.
19. Writing, obtaining and/or collecting UBP Critical Incident Reports and Student Statement Forms with the UBP Administrative Staff and/or Residential Director within 24 hours.
20. Accompany UBP Students to/from classes and UBP activities, daily.
21. Supervising UBP student lunches in the dining hall (Fridays only), University Commons, and/or UB’s Student Union.

Requirements
Applicants must be responsible, diligent, and conscientious with good communication skills. Also, applicants must have completed at least (2) years of college; maintaining a B/3.0 Grade Point Average throughout matriculation. Experience working with adolescents is highly desirable. Familiarity with TRIO programs is also highly desired, but not required
Hours, Dates and Compensation:
Teaching Assistants are required to work during the tentative hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., daily (Monday through Friday). TA’s will be paid up to $17.50/hour and must be available throughout all summer program dates, as well as, Student Orientation and Staff Pre-trainings on June 17-28, 2024, thru August 9, 2024.
