Internship & Job Search Strategies – Preparation and the 3Ps

The internship and job search can be challenging. There are a lot of actions you can take to secure a position and that can be overwhelming to know where and how to get started. In the Career Design Center we recommend that you approach the search with a plan so you can feel clear and in control of your search! The 3Ps is a great plan and way to structure your search!

Preparation + 3 P Job/Internship Searching Strategies

Preparation – Resume & LinkedIn profile

  • Use Vmock to get an instant resume review.
  • Use the Aspire module within the Vmock technology platform to get recommendations on how to optimize your LinkedIn profile.
  • Complete your profile on Bullseye powered by Handshake. That makes you 5x more likely to be messaged by an employer!

Β 1P – Job Postings

  • Use job boards to find job postings to apply to. Here are a few to get you started:
    • Bullseye powered by Handshake
    • LinkedIn.com
    • Indeed.com
  • The UB Career Design Center put together a large list of Job Sourcing Websites and resource for your convenience.

2P – Prospecting – creating a target list (or lists) of companies based upon criteria you determine.

  • This strategy is optional. Depends on your search goals.
  • For example, if you are looking for Electrical Engineering related companies in WNY, then you may want to make a list of companies in WNY that do work that relates to your interests. Likewise if you are looking for a specific industry in the NYC area that becomes your criteria for making your target list of companies.
    • Of course you can simply use Google to do your research and develop your list. I also recommend the following resources:
    • Mergent Intellect database available through the UB Libraries
    • For International students
      • Interstride available through UB Career Design Center
      • https://www.myvisajobs.com/
        • You can create a rank order list of companies who have sponsored the most to least by a job title using this site.
      • Consider Small to Mid-Size companies. These companies have great opportunities but may not have as many candidates in their pool simply because they are not as well known.
      • Consider how your work could fit into multiple industries. Create a list of companies in each industry.
      • The Career Design Center created a list of Robotics Companies – List from Robotics Summit May 2023

3P – People – networking

  • This is the strategy students are the most reluctant to exercise but it is really important and I strongly encourage it.
  • Think creatively, openly and flexibly about everyone you meet! (Anyone and Everyone! ) People know other people!
  • Article – Networking 101: 5 Steps to Build Your Career Connections
  • Article – How to Find Your People; Your network is much larger than you think
  • Use LinkedIn and LinkedIn Groups to identify UB Alumni and reach out to them!
    • Do you need to get more creative to increase the visibility of your profile? Consider writing an article on LinkedIn. Ask a Career Design Consultant about this creative strategy.
